Fort Kochi, a private houseboat night on the Alleppey canals and two days in the Munnar tea hills.
The classic Kerala route, done properly. You begin in Fort Kochi among Dutch and Portuguese warehouses, move on to a private houseboat that moors in a quiet canal rather than the main channel, and finish high in the Munnar tea country where the temperature drops and the air smells of cardamom. Pace is deliberately slow — three bases in five days, not six.
Every stop, stay and meal in the order you'll meet them. The line fills as you scroll.
Arrive at Kochi and settle into a restored heritage homestay in Fort Kochi. Late afternoon walking tour: the Dutch Cemetery, St Francis Church, Jew Town and the spice warehouses. Evening Kathakali performance with an explained make-up session beforehand.
Drive south to Alleppey and board your private kettuvallam at noon. The afternoon is spent drifting through narrow canals past villages, paddy fields below sea level and toddy shops. The boat moors overnight in a quiet backwater — not the crowded main channel. All meals cooked fresh on board.
Disembark after breakfast and climb east into the Ghats. The road passes the Cheeyappara and Valara falls before reaching Munnar. Afternoon free to walk in the estate around your hotel.
Tea estate tour with a tasting at the plantation factory, then the Eravikulam National Park for Nilgiri tahr, and a spice garden visit in the afternoon. Sunset at Echo Point.
An early drive to Top Station for the view across to Tamil Nadu before the cloud closes in, then the descent to Kochi for your flight.
The two things that decide whether a trip feels considered or improvised.

The questions travellers ask most about this journey.
No — Kerala regulations require boats to moor by 5:30pm for the protection of the waterways. Yours anchors in a quiet canal with the generator running for fans and lights.
Yes, this is one of our most family-booked routes. The houseboat is fenced on the upper deck and the cook will adjust spice levels. We can swap Eravikulam for a gentler garden visit if the climb is too much.
Between 10–18°C at night from December to February. Bring one warm layer — most people underestimate this.
