Three days among the boulders and temples of Vijayanagara, with sunrise from Matanga Hill and a guide who reads the carvings.
Hampi rewards anyone willing to start early. You climb Matanga Hill for first light over the Tungabhadra, walk Virupaksha and Vittala with an archaeologist-trained guide, and cross the river by coracle in the afternoon. The site is vast and hot by eleven, so the days are deliberately front-loaded.
Every stop, stay and meal in the order you'll meet them. The line fills as you scroll.
Arrive from Hubli or Hospet and settle in. Late afternoon at the Virupaksha Temple while it is still in use for evening worship, then sunset from Hemakuta Hill above the bazaar.
A pre-dawn climb up Matanga Hill for the view across the boulder field. After breakfast, the Vittala Temple and its stone chariot, the Queen’s Bath and the elephant stables. A coracle ride across the river in the late afternoon.
The older settlement at Anegundi across the river, then the drive back to Hospet or Hubli for onward travel.
The two things that decide whether a trip feels considered or improvised.

The questions travellers ask most about this journey.
A fair amount. The Matanga climb is around 570 uneven steps, and the royal enclosure involves two to three kilometres on flat but rocky ground. Sturdy shoes matter more here than anywhere else on our list.
Between April and June, yes. The itinerary is built around early starts for that reason, and we would steer you to the October-to-February window if your dates are flexible.
Dates, pace and stays can all be adjusted. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll rework the route.
