For two centuries Hampi was one of the richest cities on earth. What survives is a UNESCO site spread over 40 square kilometres of granite boulders — the stone chariot at Vittala, a bazaar street still standing, temple complexes with columns that ring like bells. Sunrise from Matanga Hill over the Tungabhadra is the single best view in South India, and almost nobody is there for it.
